Am I a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

Liposuction is the second most popular cosmetic surgical procedure in the United States, with well over a quarter-million procedures performed each year. At Advanced Vein Treatment and Cosmetic Center, our team uses the state-of-the-art VASER® liposuction system for more refined results and greater patient satisfaction.

If you’re thinking about liposuction, here are five factors that could make you the ideal candidate.

#1: Be close to your ideal body weight

Liposuction can remove more unwanted fat than a noninvasive procedure like CoolSculpting. Still, it’s not designed to remove very large amounts of fat. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons says the best liposuction candidates are within 30% of their ideal body weight. If you’re over that limit, it’s a good idea to try to reduce the extra weight with diet and exercise before undergoing the liposuction procedure.

Remember: Liposuction is not intended as a replacement for diet and weight loss. Rather, it complements traditional weight-loss methods, helping women and men get rid of their final few unwanted pounds and inches for a sleeker, slimmer result. It’s especially effective in treating isolated areas of fat, like a belly bulge or muffin top, for instance.

#2: Be healthy enough for the procedure

Liposuction is performed so frequently and with such success, that many people forget it’s a surgical procedure. Before undergoing liposuction, our team will review your medical history to ensure you’re healthy enough for not only the liposuction process, but sedation and anesthesia, as well.

In general, if you have a medical condition that interferes with normal healing, liposuction might not be a good option for you. That’s also true if you have a bleeding disorder or a serious medical problem like some types of heart ailments.

#3: Have realistic expectations and specific goals

Before your liposuction procedure, it’s very important to discuss your goals for treatment, including the areas that bother you the most and what your ultimate goals are with regard to your treatment. You should also make sure you understand the healing process — what to expect after your treatment and how long it will take for you to see your results. All these factors ensure you will get the results you want without feeling frustrated or overwhelmed while you recover.

#4: Be a nonsmoker

If you’re a smoker, you already know all the really important reasons why you should quit. But if you smoke and you plan to have liposuction, you can add this to your list: Smoking interferes with healing. While our team uses techniques to control bleeding during the liposuction procedure, there’s still some bleeding, and your body definitely needs time to heal afterward.

Smoking interferes with natural healing processes, and it also interferes with circulation, which is critical to helping your body recover. Quitting for good is obviously the best option, but at least stop smoking for several weeks before and after your liposuction procedure to support good healing and ensure the best results.

#5: Be the perfect age

Surprise! There is no perfect age for liposuction. As an adult, you can have liposuction at any age, as long as you’re healthy enough to undergo the procedure. If you’re older, your skin probably won’t be as elastic as it was when you were younger. That means it may not hug your new contours as well. In that case, skin tightening treatments can help firm your skin so you look and feel great.
