How Fillers Can Make You Look Younger

Wrinkles, sagging skin, and a loss of plumpness and volume may all be “symptoms” of the natural skin aging process, but that doesn’t mean we have to embrace them. Plenty of women and men choose not to, turning to dermal fillers to restore a more youthful appearance that helps them feel more attractive and more confident.

You probably know fillers can help turn back the clock on many common signs of aging. But do you know how fillers work to achieve those results? Amjad Safvi, MD, and the team at Advanced Vein Treatment and Cosmetic Center want every patient to know the ins and outs of their filler treatments, so they can feel confident about their treatment choices and their results. Here’s how fillers can help you regain a more youthful appearance.

Facial fillers 101

When most people think of injections for getting rid of wrinkles, they probably think of Botox®. For sure, Botox can do a great job of reducing dynamic wrinkles — lines caused by repeated facial movements. That's because Botox controls the muscle contractions that cause dynamic wrinkles to form.

But as effective as Botox is in treating dynamic wrinkles, it’s not meant to treat the second big category of wrinkles — static wrinkles. Static wrinkles aren’t caused by muscle movements.

Instead, these lines and wrinkles form as a result of years of sun and environmental damage, illness, genetics, and good old gravity.

Sun damage and aging effects combine to result in a dramatic loss of collagen as we get older. Collagen is a natural building block of skin, giving young skin its bounce, firmness, and smooth appearance. As collagen production drops off with age, our skin loses natural volume and wrinkles become a lot more common.

The best way to reduce static wrinkles is to restore the plumpness of the skin’s structure and “fill in” those pesky lines. To do that, you need fillers. Fillers are designed specifically to treat static wrinkles, and there are several types of fillers on the market, depending on the location and depth of the wrinkles and the results you’re looking for.

Types of fillers

Nearly three million filler treatments are performed each year in the United States, making filler injections one of the most popular nonsurgical cosmetic treatments overall. One reason why fillers are so effective in achieving results is that they come in different “formulations” to achieve different effects, providing a customizable treatment option for each patient.

Juvéderm®

Juvéderm uses hyaluronic acid, a material that’s found naturally in the lower levels of your skin. Hyaluronic acid plumps up skin while also helping it retain moisture. It’s a good choice for filling in scars and plumping up the lip area, too.

Belotero Balance®

Belotero Balance also uses hyaluronic acid, but in a gentler formulation. As a result, Belotero Balance achieves a softer, subtler result, making it a good choice for very fine lines and softer wrinkles.

Radiesse®

Radiesse uses a different material — calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) — to fill in wrinkles. This formula is primarily used to treat moderate to severe lines and wrinkles, like the marionette lines around your nose and mouth. It’s also a great choice for restoring lost volume in the cheeks and other areas.

All these fillers work in two major ways to reduce the signs of aging. First, the special filler material helps plump up skin instantly, softening or erasing lines and wrinkles and restoring lost volume in the cheeks, lips, and other areas. Second, the filler injections spur natural healing processes inside your skin, stimulating the development of new collagen and elastin, so the skin looks and feels plumper, firmer, and more resilient over time.

Another great thing about fillers: They can be combined with Botox injections to treat both static and dynamic wrinkles, achieving what’s commonly called a “liquid facelift” — essentially, all-over youthful benefits without the risks and downsides of costly surgery.
