When to Consider Botox Injections

Everyone wants to age gracefully and confidently. But when every new day seems to bring another wrinkle or line around your eyes or mouth, it’s hard not to get a little frustrated. After all, your face says a lot about you. If wrinkles and lines are making you look older than you feel, it’s time to do something about it.

For many women and men in Lake Zurich and Chicago Ridge, Illinois, Botox® injections at Advanced Vein Treatment and Cosmetic Center are just the solution they’re looking for. Amjad Safvi, MD, and his team tailor each Botox treatment for the most natural, rejuvenated results. Here’s how to tell if Botox can help you turn back the clock on aging.

The science of Botox

Botox is a neuromuscular agent that works on the nerve signals between your brain and your facial muscles. To understand how that prevents wrinkles, you need to know how those lines form in the first place.

When you make a facial expression — smiling, frowning, laughing — your facial nerves transmit signals between your brain and your facial muscles, telling those muscles to contract. In turn, those contractions tug on the overlying skin, creating folds. After years of repeated expressions, those folds eventually wind up etching lines and wrinkles into your skin.

Botox injections work by blocking those nerve signals. That means when you make an expression, your facial muscles aren’t “told” to contract. They don’t tug on your skin, and those wrinkles and lines don’t form.

Dynamic vs. static wrinkles

Because these lines and wrinkles are related to muscle movements, they’re called dynamic wrinkles. The other main type of wrinkles — static wrinkles — happen due to gravity, sun damage, collagen loss, and other issues not related to your facial muscles.

Botox only works on dynamic wrinkles. To treat static wrinkles, fillers typically are a better choice. Many people opt to have both Botox and fillers to address both types of wrinkles — without surgery.

When to consider Botox

Every year in the United States, millions of people have Botox treatment to smooth out wrinkles and lines. Botox is an especially good choice for wrinkles that show up around your eyes and forehead, including:

Botox can also be used to treat some types of wrinkles around your mouth, including smoker’s lines or pucker lines.

Botox as prevention

Of course, you don’t have to wait for wrinkles to become “permanent” to enjoy the benefits of Botox. One of the benefits of Botox is that it may be used proactively to help prevent lines and wrinkles before they become “etched” into your skin. Today, women and men in their 30s and even their 20s are turning to Botox to help keep dynamic wrinkles from forming in the first place.

The bottom line: If you’re concerned about lines and wrinkles — now or in your future — Botox injections could be just what you’re looking for.
