Spider Veins Q & A

What are spider veins?

Spider veins are small, red or blue veins that look like thin lines or webs. When they're damaged, they become visible, and they're most common on the face and legs. Although they're harmless, many people prefer to have them removed for cosmetic reasons.

If you have spider vein concerns, visit Advanced Vein Treatment and Cosmetic Center to explore treatment options.

What causes spider veins?

Spider veins occur on the face and legs for different reasons.

Face spider veins

Spider veins occur on the face when tiny blood vessels burst, usually because of sun damage or increased pressure, like when coughing or sneezing.

Leg spider veins

Spider veins on the legs happen when the valves that prevent blood from flowing backward stop working. The blood then pools in the non-functional veins, creating spider veins.

Who is most at risk of developing spider veins?

While spider veins can affect anybody, some factors put people more at risk of developing them. These include:

  • Being older
  • Being female
  • Being overweight
  • Standing or sitting for long periods
  • Pregnancy
  • Hormone levels
  • Genetics
  • History of blood clots

At Advanced Vein Treatment and Cosmetic Center, Dr. Safvi asks questions to identify what caused your spider veins so he can make recommendations to prevent more from developing.

What's the treatment for spider veins?

Advanced Vein Treatment and Cosmetic Center offers several spider vein treatments:

Laser vein removal

For spider veins smaller than 3mm long and close to the skin's surface, Dr. Safvi treats them with a laser. Laser treatment uses an intense light beam to dry up the vein.

Endovenous laser ablation

Endovenous laser ablation uses radiofrequency energy or strong bursts of laser light. Dr. Safvi uses state-of-the-art technology to target the vein, causing it to fade and disappear.

When vein walls become irritated, they stick together, preventing blood from flowing into the area. Sclerotherapy involves injecting an irritant into the vein, causing the vein to shrink.

After a vein removal treatment on the legs, Dr. Safvi typically recommends you wear compression stockings to help with healing. You may need several sessions to see the best results.
